The White Whale and the Old Testament English Ver

“Call me Ishmael”

Herman Melville

The name Ishmael is not common in the Christian world. It seems to be treated as an abominable name
It is the name of a character in the Old Testament, as in Herman Melville’s “The White Whale”, where the narrator, who appears to be the hero, says “Call me Ishmael”.

The White Whale seems to be of great importance to Nobel Prize winners and foreign literary greats, many of whom take up the challenge of analysing this difficult novel. Even if you’re not a literary person, Starbucks is partly named after a character in this novel. (XO Starbuck, first class)

In the Old Testament, Abraham’s (Abram’s) wife, who was 75 years old and unlikely to have children, brought a young slave woman, Hagar, to be with her husband and conceive a child.

Sarah ran away from Hagar because she was in her way and she was harsh with her. However, she met an angel of the Lord by a spring in the wilderness who told her to return to her husband. He tells her to name the child in her womb Ishmael and that he will be her brother’s enemy. (Genesis: 16)

Sarah, in her old age, became pregnant.(Genesis: Chapter 18) Sara gave birth to the child she had conceived. He was named Isaac (Genesis: 21). Ishmael made fun of her son Isaac, and Sarah tried again to get rid of Hagar and Ishmael. Abraham heard about it and the angel of the Lord told him to do as Sarah said. Abraham gave Hagar a leather bag of water and she and Ishmael wandered in the wilderness (desert). When the water ran out, Ishmael cried out in the face of death and was rescued by the angel of the Lord.

Ishmael, the son of iniquity and the enemy of his brothers, has been a name that has not left a good impression throughout history.

It has spread mainly in the Christian world, with the exception of the Muslim world.

In The White Whale, as in the Old Testament, the hero Ishmael (not really his name, strictly speaking) makes a miraculous return to life, and the divine trials and blessings he undergoes are shrouded in a light unimaginable to those who know the meaning of the Bible.

The white whale (Moby-Dick), whom the sailors refer to as the devil and who has been ubiquitous but unseen for years, is found off the coast of Japan. There a terrible fight to the death takes place. All the crew, including Captain Ahab, are dragged into the water by the white whale. Afterwards, in an afterword, changing from first to third person point of view, Ishmael is told that he miraculously survived.

Repressed by puritanical public opinion for naming an illegitimate child, the work was not appreciated at the time, but it has been appreciated in time, and the difficult book has been analised. Still, perhaps, it is difficult to see where the heroic character was loved by God, or to find the Old Testament description of God’s trials and angels during the period of his survival.

Nowadays we feel the light of the miraculous return to life, but whether life is really grace or not, today a doubtful mark is placed. At times there is a sense that reality is clouded by vague, kind words.

But when I look into the beautiful eyes of Adam(my cat) I know that life is grace.

But when I look into the beautiful eyes of Adam, my cat, I know that life is grace.
There is probably no human being who can accept that grace without being clouded by it.

His clear blue eyes make you forget that he is only three years old.

He sings for us to watch with him as the sun rises, and stares quietly at the sun. When the sun goes down, he sits at the window and watches it carefully again. He is always so kind and caring to me. I am happy to earn money because of her. I have learned the warmth of life and the importance of nurturing it.

He’ s wiser and more pure than most arrogant people,

innocent as a lamb

Human beings are not the best.

We don’t even have control over our own biological systems.

There are many people who have mistaken dominion for subjugation of the earth in Genesis.

God allowed livestock to multiply, but did he require domination?

The White Whale is about the end of such people.

The White Whale was the end of such people and the grace of survival for the ignorant.
