『“I hope you don’t mind”ということ』
日本では馴染みのある
エルトンジョンの you’re song の
I hope you don’t mind. をどう訳するのか、
単純なようで色々と訳し方があります。理由は語感が日本語となるとインパクトが弱くなってしまうことにあります。意味を近づけるというより、英語のこの語感に近づけたいという願望がそうさせている気がします。
どんな歌詞かと簡単に言ってしまうと、
『僕が君のために作った歌だけど、
気にしないでね。(I hope you don’t mind)
とか、重く捉えないでね、(I hope you don’t mind)』
とかそういう意味があります。
最近になって聞いてみると、こういうのは物書き(作家、作詞作曲)の愛し方かなと思います。作品を作るときは愛する人をモデルにしたとしても、作品が愛されなければなりません。愛されるのが前提なのか、結果として愛されるのかは、卵が先か鶏が先かというような話なのですけど、愛する人に何か書くときは、伝えたい、伝わること、愛されること、作品として望まれる全てを忘れたいのですよね。それが物書きにとって愛する人だけに送る特別性なんじゃないかな。
変な話なんですけどね。
だから、歌詞の冒頭部分から
『It’s a little bit funny this feeling inside

少し可笑しな話だけど、僕は自分の気持ちを簡単に隠せないんだ。

I’d buy a big house where we both could live
そんなにお金はないけど、お金があったら家を買うよ・・・

Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show
僕が彫刻家だったら、いや違うな。僕が

と、纏まりの無い話になっていきます。
でもこれは、「お喋りしたい」という、ただそれだけの願望なんですよね。それでさえも、なんだか貴重な気がして言いたくなる、それが恋とか愛を表しています。
『I know it’s not much but it’s the best I can do My gift is my song and this one’s for you
「それで歌を送ることが僕は出来るよ」』
とあるけど本当はそれが伝えたいことじゃない。これすらもまだ自己紹介のような状態です。そしてメインのメロディ、
『And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it’s done
I hope you don’t mind
I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you’re in the world
これは君の歌だよ、それをみんなに伝えていいよ。シンプルなメロディだけど
やっと出来たんだ。
気楽に聞いてよ(I hope you don’t mind)
軽い気持ちで聞いてよ(I hope you don’t mind)
こんな言葉で書いたけど、(愛を伝える歌)
君がこの世界にいてくれれば、世界は美しいんだ。』
と、二回繰り返すI hope you don’t mind は私は気楽に聞いてよ、軽い気持ちで聞いてよ、と言いかたを変えて訳しました。
『Anyway the thing is what I really mean

僕が本当に伝えたいことは、君の瞳が美しいということさ。
I hope you don’t mind
I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you’re in the world
気楽に聞いてよ
軽い気持ちで聞いてよ、
こんな気持ちで書いたけど、
君がこの世界にいてくれれば
僕は嬉しいんだ。
そして本当に美しいのは
君の瞳なんだ、僕の歌は それを表したいだけなんだ。』
と、私は解釈しています。
人の評価を待つ物書きの仕事をしていると、作品を渡しているのに、I hope you don’t mindなんて言って渡しません。そんなのは仕事になりませんからね。
そういう身でありながら、I hope you don’t mindと言って渡すことは、愛する人への特別なことなんですね。私もそうかもしれません。
I hope you don’t mind , I love you.
そういう感覚なのかなと。歌詞だけではなく、エルトンジョンの甘い声がそう思わせるのかな。ポップスはシンプルな言葉だけど、歌手の声の表現によって深みが出たり言葉の意味が左右されるところがありますね。
